In January’s article we featured information regarding the ILM Programme, identifying some key differences between this and other schemes which support the unemployed and disadvantaged groups back in to work.
As a result of our article we are happy to announce the first new placement with a Social Enterprise employer! We will keep you posted on the progress.
During February we had a total of five successes from the programme. That means five new employees found permanent employment as a result of being on the ILM Norfolk programme. Here is just one of the success stories.
When Varin left school he went on to College and eventually gained a variety of qualifications in IT, Retail and Communication. What Varin really wanted was the opportunity to work but he struggled for several years to find a suitable role or an employer who would understand and meet his needs.
Varin has Asperger syndrome and had found the work place a difficult environment simply because he lacked the confidence to communicate effectively at all levels.
At the age of 21, Varin aware that he needed some guidance and support approached national charity the Shaw Trust who were delivering a programme funded by ESF (European Social Fund) in Partnership with Jobcentre plus. The Norfolk ILM (Intermediate Labour Market) project aims to enable people who have been claiming benefits for a year or more due to disadvantage or disability related issues, to move into mainstream employment. The programme provides training, vocational development, a paid work placement, mentoring and support and job search advice leading to the ultimate goal of landing a permanent job.
Varin, now 22 joined the ILM project in May 2009 following an initial assessment and follow up support with his work placement search. He began a placement at Ellacombe Residential Home, Norwich run by Norfolk County Council. He was employed as a Domestic Assistant and within months the word spread and this reliable and conscientious worker was in demand to cover shifts at two other Norfolk County Council run homes, namely Heathfield and Mountfield.
Varin’s placement was such a success that he applied for a job as a Domestic Assistant at Mountfield was been offered a permanent role, which includes working as an integral team member.
Fiona Harley of Mountfield described Varin as a good team player, hardworking and reliable. A pleasure to have on her team.
Chris Murphy of Ellacombe Residential Home said, “Varin made excellent progress and became a valued member of the team.”
Varin said, “I am enjoying having a permanent role and being part of a great team”
Jeanette Gant, Shaw Trust Employment Advisor (ILM) said, “It is so rewarding to see the progress Varin has made simply by being given a fighting chance in the right working environment. He is a bright and capable man with a great sense of humour. We are all delighted that he has achieved the ultimate aim of this programme by moving into employment. Mentoring and support will continue now that Varin is in work.”
